What to Wear for Your Engagement Shoot

28 March 2024 — Guides

The question I get asked most before an engagement session is: what should we wear? The honest answer is that it matters less than you think. But since some guidance is always helpful, here are the principles I share with every couple.

Comfort First

If you don't feel like yourself, it will show. Choose clothes you already love and feel good in. This is not the time to debut a new look or break in new shoes. The best engagement photos come from couples who are relaxed, and you can't relax in something that pulls, pinches, or requires constant adjusting.

Think in Textures, Not Colours

I always suggest thinking about textures rather than specific colours. Knits, linen, denim, wool, these all photograph beautifully. Bold patterns and logos can distract the eye from what matters: the connection between you. Muted, earthy tones tend to work well in natural settings, while darker shades suit urban environments.

Coordinate, don't match. You want to complement each other without looking like you planned it too carefully. Think tonal harmony rather than identical palettes. And when in doubt, bring options. I'm always happy to help you decide on the day.
